Course Description

This course is designed to provide training in the basic theory and operational use of navigating instruments found on board vessels. These navigating instruments include (but not limited to): Radar, ARPA, Loran-C, AIS, gyro and Magnetic compasses, GPS & DGPS, Echo sounder, speed & distance logs, voyage data recorder, course recorder, fluxgate compass, and the auto-pilot.

Students study the following topics: theory of operation; use of controls; derivation of information; data correction and use of data in position fixing; recognition of false information and malfunctions;

This course follows the guidelines of STCW78 as amended, parallels the framework of the IMO Model Courses and fulfills the requirements of the applicable sections of TP10530, IMO Model Courses 1.07 and sections 1.1.1, 1.1.4, 1.1.5 and 1.1.6 of IMO Model Course 7.03.

 

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will have the basic knowledge of the principles of operation and the skills required for the correct operation and use of navigational equipment for the safety of navigation of a vessel.

You will be able to:

  1. describe the principles of operation of navigational equipment
  2. set up and operate navigational equipment
  3. recognize and explain the common errors and malfunctions
  4. correct or compensate for common errors and malfunctions
  5. use navigational equipment for safe navigation

Tuition non-credit $2,500.00 or $500.00 deposit

A non-refundable $500 registration deposit is now  an option for Nautical courses. The remaining tuition is due fourteen (14) calendar days prior to the start date of the course.  If the course is dropped the deposit will not be refunded.  

If a course is paid in full at the time of registration and dropped prior to one week before the start date a full refund is available. To drop a course paid in full please contact prosit@camosun.ca.
