Course Description

In this course, you will use ArcGIS software to learn about geospatial data and how GIS can be used in a broad range of applications. You will learn how to create and edit geospatial data, combine data in informative maps, and build story maps and other web applications to share your work. You will also learn fundamental concepts of GIS, including data models, coordinate systems and projections.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Select the appropriate data type for data collection or creation.
  • Identify the non-spatial information that is needed for a specific application.
  • Document data using established standards.
  • Evaluate data sources and select suitable data for a specific application.
  • Use GIS software and related technologies, e.g., ArcGIS web and mobile apps, to perform data collection and creation.
  • Perform basic analysis of spatial data using GIS software, including assessing positional accuracy of collected data.
  • Apply map design principles to interactive web maps, including colour, contrast, symbology and labelling.
  • Apply filters and simple scripts to modify the appearance of data in an interactive map.
  • Document and report on all stages of the data collection/creation and analysis process

The course will include some synchronous online sessions occurring at a scheduled day and time, as well as some self-directed activities which students complete at the time of their choosing while adhering to specified due dates.
